If it wasn’t for one man, Liverpool Football Club would never have been born. When Everton left Anfield in a dispute over rent in 1892, club chairman John Houlding stayed behind along with a handful of supporters and just three first-team players. And Dossena can’t wait to see his countryman in regular action alongside arguably the best midfielder in world football.

“Potentially, Aquilani is a great player,” said the left-back.

“He is a complete midfielder who can do everything at both ends of the pitch. He can run, defend, make a hard tackle or score with his terrific shot from long distance.

“He and Gerrard together can give us the strongest midfield in the league, and one of the strongest at European level. Over the past two seasons he has played little football because of his injuries, but when he is fully fit he will prove his value.

“Give him just a little time to settle in England, on and off the pitch, and he will be a sensational player.”

First of all Karl, tell us about the injury that has kept you out for the majority of the season so far…

I injured my patella tendon in training just after we came back from the pre-season tournaments in Spain. There’s a flat pad behind your knee and I’ve inflamed the tendon. It’s been dragging on and it’s really frustrating.

You actually played recently though, at home to Bolton…

Yes, I played a half. It was still niggling though and I’ve been left out since to try and get rid of the problem.

So, how long do you think you will be on the sidelines?

I’m not sure to be honest. I’m speaking to the physiotherapists on a daily basis. We can’t really put a finger on why it’s still causing me trouble. Hopefully I’ll be back sooner rather than later.

You’re a local lad, has it always been your ambition to wear the red of Liverpool?

Yes. I’m from Anfield and I’ve lived there for 10 years or so. My Nan actually bought an Everton shirt when I was really young, but my Dad was having none of that and I’m pleased to say I’ve always supported Liverpool.
